Journalism site ProPublica writes too much

Blog, Responsible Rant

01 Mar 2011

The current top story over at ProPublica is headlined “Hydrofracked? One Man’s Mystery Leads to a Backlash Against Natural Gas Drilling.” Boy, that’s an unruly headline. And what the heck does it mean? Look at how succinctly the website can summarize the article under a photograph.

Louis Meeks’ well water contains methane gas, hydrocarbons, lead and copper, according to the EPA’s test results. When he drilled a new water well, it also showed contaminants. The drilling company EnCana is supplying Meeks with drinking water. (ProPublica)

I didn’t read any of the article. It takes the author 12 PAGES to write it. Holy cow. Boil it down for me. Why do you have to purge all your notes and background information? I don’t have that kind of time. And I won’t ever read anything on your website.

Nieman Lab initially drew me to the “too-much-news” organization with this tweet…

ProPublica is just giving that journalism away. Sometimes it’s best to stop writing.
